Exporting Used Vehicles to the Mexico
Used pick-ups and vehicles can be exported to Mexico
through the Santa Teresa Port of Entry only. While
pick-ups can be exported to the interior of Mexico,
a variety of other types of vehicles can be exported to the
border zone area in Mexico. The following information
will help clarify the various requirements and procedures necessary to export vehicles to Mexico.

Exporting Used Pick-ups

Pick-up trucks must meet these requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years old.
  • Weigh less than 7054 lbs (3200 Kgs.).
  • The vehicle must have a gasoline engine.
  • Bought in either The United States or Canada.
  • The pickup cannot have any devices that allow it to transport commercial or oversized loads.

Note: Only Mexican residents can export Pick-up trucks.

Documentation Required for Exporting Pick-ups
All documents must be under name of the person exporting the pick-up truck. The following documents are required to export a pick-up truck to Mexico:

  1. Original title and 2 copies (front & back) of title with indication of the vehicle value.
  2. Identification required by:
    1. U.S. customs broker and U.S. CBP - two copies of either a Resident Alien Card, Visa, Mexican Passport, or U.S. Drivers License
    2. Mexican customs broker and Aduana Mexico (Mexican customs) - Voters registration card, Consulate Issued ID or Mexican Passport.
  3. Shippers Export Declaration (SED) - Obtained from a US customs broker if value of pick-up truck exceeds US$2,500.
  4. Pedimento - Obtained from a Mexican customs broker. The customs broker will charge you the following fees and taxes to obtain a pedimento.
    1. General import tax - 2,500 Mexican Pesos
    2. Mexican customs processing fee
    3. Document validation fee
    4. Mexican value added tax
    5. New vehicle tax (1994 & newer vehicles only)

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If a lien holder appears on the certificate of title, a written statement must be provided by the lien holder stating that they authorize the permanent export of the vehicle to Mexico. The statement must include:

  1. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  2. Complete description of the vehicle
  3. Name of the owner or lien holder
  4. The telephone number(s) where they may be contacted
  5. Signature of the owner of lien holder
  6. Date which the statement was signed

Procedure for Exporting Pick-ups
Vehicle exports may only be performed at the Santa Teresa port of entry using the export vehicle lane by following these procedures:

  1. Obtain a date stamping from the U.S. CBP export vehicle inspection station on title or certified copies 3 days (72 hours) before exporting the pick-up. Two copies of your identification are required.
  2. Obtain the Shippers Export Document (if applicable) from a U.S. customs broker and pedimento from a Mexican customs broker.
  3. After the 72-hour period expires, proceed to export the vehicle through the Santa Teresa port of entry. Vehicles will be subject to inspection by U.S. CBP prior to being exported. Present stamped title, copies of title, Shippers Export Document if applicable, and pedimento.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If pick-up truck is taken into Mexico before the 3-day (72 hours) period expires the owner will be subject to a US$500 fine.

Exporting Used Vehicles Other than Pick-ups
A Mexican resident living in the US/Mexican border region may export a used vehicle to Mexico on a permanent basis for use in the border zone. The vehicle to be exported must be of similar makes and models of those found in Mexico and must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. The vehicle must be a minimum of 5 years old.
  2. The vehicle may not have a value greater than US$12,000.
  3. Van or station wagon passenger limits may not exceed 10.
  4. The vehicle must have a gasoline engine.
  5. The vehicle must be equipped with a catalytic converter.

The following types of vehicles cannot be exported to Mexico:

  • Sports Cars
  • Convertibles
  • Luxury Automobiles

Documentation Required for Exporting
All documents must be under the name of the person exporting the vehicle. The following documents are required to export a used vehicle to the border zone in Mexico:

  1. Either a registered voter's license with a utility bill (telephone, rent receipt, electricity) or a U.S. Passport, or a Visa, or a Migration form granted by the Mexican Secretariat of Government.
  2. Original title and 2 copies (front & back) of title with indication of the vehicle value.
  3. Identification required by:
    1. U.S. customs broker and U.S. CBP - two copies of either a Resident Alien Card, Visa, Mexican Passport, or U.S. Drivers License
    2. Mexican customs broker and Aduana Mexico (Mexican customs) - Voters registration card, Consulate Issued ID or Mexican Passport.
  4. Shippers Export Declaration (SED) - Obtained from a US customs broker if value of pick-up truck exceeds US$2,500.
